SAN QUENTIN, California — Thirty-four students are pursuing bachelor’s degrees through a new California State University, Los Angeles program at San Quentin Rehabilitation Center, the Governor’s Office reported on October 22.
The inaugural cohort is working toward a Liberal Studies degree through a 21-month program based in the prison’s Learning Center. State officials described the initiative as part of an effort to expand education and improve preparation for life after incarceration.
According to the announcement, bachelor’s programs operate at 12 California correctional institutions through partnerships with the California State University and University of California systems.
The program brings university instruction into the institution, adding another educational pathway for eligible students. Officials presented the initiative as a rehabilitation measure; the announcement does not report employment or reoffending outcomes for this new cohort.
