Maryland recorded a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 3.9 percent in September 2026, compared with 4.1 percent in August, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The September estimate is preliminary.

Employers’ payrolls totaled approximately 2,794,300 nonfarm jobs. The published estimates show 8,800 fewer jobs than in August. This payroll measure counts positions, rather than individual employed residents.

The civilian labor force was approximately 3,201,600 people, 1,900 higher than in August. The lower rounded jobless rate accompanied a smaller payroll total, illustrating why the measures should be read together.

These are numerical comparisons of estimates, not a determination that each change is statistically significant. Figures may be revised. The state table was extracted October 20, 2026.
