Workers in shrinking occupations can struggle to move into growing fields, even when they change jobs, according to research discussed by UCLA sociology professor Jennie Brand.

In an October 13 university interview, Brand distinguished exposure to artificial intelligence from the skills needed to use it. A job may contain tasks that AI could accelerate without its workers having training or support to benefit from those tools.

The researchers emphasize that AI exposure alone does not establish who will lose employment. Their concern centers on the combination of declining demand, limited mobility and weak access to better alternatives. Changing occupations can leave a worker in another declining field rather than improving pay or security.
