Mercedes Reshard New, known on social media as “Shawty Dred,” was arrested on federal charges relating to alleged fraud involving more than $4 million in SNAP benefits. Northern District of Georgia prosecutors announced the case on October 21.
The program provides food assistance to low-income households. Authorities allege that the defendant obtained those funds fraudulently, but must prove the claims in court. His work as a content creator does not itself establish an offense, and he retains the presumption of innocence.
