City Hall warns that it does not collect payments through links sent by SMS, WhatsApp or email.
Tijuana, BC.— City Hall warned about text messages notifying recipients of supposed parking fines and including payment links, in an attempt to impersonate official institutions and obtain money or personal information.
In the October 23 warning, the Information Technology Department explained that senders use pages imitating institutional websites to gain trust.
Municipal authorities said they do not send text messages, WhatsApp messages or emails to collect payments. They therefore asked people not to pay or provide banking information through links in those communications.
The official website uses the tijuana.gob.mx domain. The municipality recommended checking the entire web address and distrusting variations or added words designed to make a page appear legitimate. The warning identifies neither a number of victims nor a monetary loss.
