Start with the income you actually have
Write down how much money you will actually receive and on what date. Do not budget a loan, bonus or sale that is not yet confirmed. If income varies, use a cautious scenario and update it when paid. Separating dates matters: a monthly budget may hide an obligation that falls due before the next payday.
Make priorities visible
Record housing, food, necessary transport, health expenses and commitments with due dates. Then identify adjustable spending and purchases that can wait. Condusef recommends budgeting to organize income and expenses. No percentage allocation works for every household, especially when basic costs exceed income.
An exercise with 6,000 pesos
Assume, solely as an example, 2,000 pesos for housing, 1,500 for food, 600 for transport, 500 for utilities and 800 for planned obligations. These total 5,400, leaving 600 to allocate. The amounts are not an estimate of the national cost of living. If your actual expenses exceed income, copying these numbers will not solve the problem.
Divide the money by date and purpose
Identify how much you need before the next payday and what belongs to later payments. A notebook, spreadsheet or separate balances in an account you understand may help. Check fees and access to funds before using a tool. Avoid treating everything as “available” when some already has an essential purpose.
What to do when the budget is negative
Identify expenses you can reduce without compromising basic needs and payments that require speaking with the creditor. Compare the total cost of any new debt; do not use one loan to cover another without understanding interest, fees and the schedule. If the deficit is persistent, review income and commitments with reliable financial guidance.
End the pay period with data
Compare planned and actual spending and identify differences without hiding them. An unexpected medical expense differs from a forgotten subscription. Adjust the next period and, when possible, gradually build a reserve. Budgeting helps decisions but does not replace sufficient income or eliminate debt on its own.
