To promote prevention and self-care within the university community, the Autonomous University of Baja California Sur (UABCS) held another edition of its Health Fair on October 21. The event focused on wellness and health education, with information and service booths staffed by health sector personnel.
The event ran from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and included booths covering nutrition and physical activity, contraception, accident prevention, addictions, violence, sexually transmitted infections and preventive medicine, among other subjects.
Attendees could access services, receive direct guidance from health professionals and learn self-care practices to incorporate into everyday life.
At the opening ceremony, UABCS rector Dr. Dante Salgado González stressed that young people should not rely solely on their age or physical condition to stay healthy and should instead make prevention part of their daily habits.
“This Health Fair reminds you not to take your youth for granted, because prevention is the best medicine. I invite you to take care of yourselves and use the services available to you. I thank this wonderful team for serving you with such enthusiasm, commitment and dedication,” he said.
He emphasized that health concerns everyone and that people need to move beyond treating illnesses only when they arise, giving greater importance to preventive measures and healthy lifestyles.
He also invited students to speak with specialists, use the knowledge shared and pass the information on to their families and social circles, helping extend the reach of prevention messages.
Dr. Patricia Romero, director of Health Services in Baja California Sur, attended on behalf of state Health Secretary Dr. María Luisa Guluarte Castro. She said links between educational institutions and preventive health programs are fundamental to changing attitudes and encouraging informed decisions that support well-being.
She emphasized the importance of joint efforts to provide people with tools for healthy behaviors, from vaccination and contraception to medical checkups and preventive tests that facilitate early detection of disease.
Academic department heads and UABCS administrators also attended the event, supporting an initiative aimed at improving the university community’s well-being and reaffirming prevention as a shared responsibility.
