Hōlei Sea Arch has collapsed at Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park, the National Park Service reported on October 1.
The approximately 90-foot coastal formation fell sometime after September 23 and before September 27. The agency did not establish an exact time of collapse. Its announcement should not be interpreted as proof that a particular storm caused the failure.
The photograph accompanying this report shows the arch before its collapse in 2022. Visitors should respect closures and stay back from unstable coastal cliffs, where changing conditions can create hazards beyond the former arch.
