AUSTIN, Texas — A UT Austin project combining dance and engineering has received a $643,719 research award to explore how artificial intelligence can learn from human movement.
Researchers Sinclair Emoghene and Lillian Chin are developing a movement language model using recordings and sensor data, the university announced October 23.
The work captures movement, touch, force and pressure to examine how dance carries information about culture, history and communities. The team has processed 155 recordings from 33 countries and plans to expand the collection.
The project remains a research effort. Its goals concern new ways to study movement and train AI systems, rather than replacing the cultural knowledge or creative judgment of dancers.
