La Paz, Baja California Sur, October 25, 2026.— NASA’s Dragonfly mission completed an integrated simulation of its first flight over Titan, Saturn’s largest moon, using a test platform developed at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory in Maryland, United States.

The test, announced by NASA on October 23, recreated in real time a sequence in which the eight-rotor vehicle separates from its descent system, analyzes the terrain, finds a safe spot and lands. It was a computer and electronics test on Earth: Dragonfly has not reached Titan.

The system combined navigation programs and equipment similar to what the spacecraft will carry with simulated data from cameras, motion sensors and lidar, a device used to calculate heights, slopes and possible obstacles. Engineers want to verify how these components interact before a real operation far from our planet.

The spacecraft will have to make flight decisions without instantaneous instructions from Earth-based operators because of Saturn’s enormous distance from Earth. Engineers will conduct additional tests, including simulations with deliberate faults, to evaluate automatic responses.

The mission plans to launch no earlier than 2028 and travel to Titan to begin investigations in 2034. Its scientific objective is to analyze the moon’s chemistry, geology and environmental conditions, which are relevant to studying the origins of molecules associated with life.
